New Classrooms Open in the Village of Bung!
Celebrations have been taking place in the Village of Bung as the 6 new and 2 refurbished classrooms at Shree Sagarmatha High School have been officially opened. In March, a joyous crowd witnessed the opening of 2 pairs of classrooms built to earthquake resistant standards with an innovative design that joins them with a shared covered area. This will provide the necessary space for all weather, child centred learning activities. This phase of the project has been funded by a very generous International Rotary Global Grant. The Rotary Club of North Wirral, UK are the project sponsors and the Rotary Club of Dillibazar based in Kathmandu are the host Rotary Club. Their project objective being to construct 2 of the classrooms and a covered area for younger children in order to raise standards in basic education and literacy in these foundation years. Read more in the North Wirral Rotary newsletter here. The second pair of classrooms has been supported by the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service Apprentices who were able to join the ceremony after travelling to Nepal to see the results of their tireless fundraising and help with the finishing touches. A further ceremony was also held in April to open the additional 2 new classrooms supported by the Dudley Schools partnership and the 2 refurbished classrooms thanks to the British Foreign Schools Society. Representatives from the Dudley partnership were in attendance and were warmly welcomed by the community of Bung along with the school management committee and government officials.
The building work is in addition to 4 earthquake resistant classrooms built by CITC in 2017 and is part of our wider vision to improve educational standards in the area.
In May, Mr Vishwas Sahasrabhojanee, District Governor IR3030 India, carried out a detailed project evaluation inspection in respect of the International Rotary's Global Grant. We await his report but the early indications are that he was pleased with what he saw.
